Playlist and Channel Duplication Solutions

There are three known scenarios that can cause the spawning of duplicate playlists and channels. If you are experiencing this issue, please read the following three descriptions and see if they apply to your setup:

1.      MAPPED NETWORK DRIVE

If you have a mapped drive as a monitored folder, then replace the current path with the UNC path.  For example, if your mapped network drive is listed in the collection settings screen with this format F:\folder\ change it to \\computername\folder\.

2.      MULTIPLE ZUNE CLIENTS

If you have multiple instances of Zune accessing the same playlist (for example you have more than one PC with Zune installed on it, and they are sharing content over a network), then you need to verify that they are both the same version (at the time of this writing the version of the Zune software client would be 3.1.620.0).  Please download the most current version of the client http://www.zune.net/software/download/default.htm.

3.      WINDOWS HOME SERVER

If you have the playlists on a network share and you don’t have full read/write access to that share, then you need to move the Zune folder to a local drive.

The corrective actions described in the scenarios above will prevent any further playlist spawning.  However, you will still need to go into the Zune\Playlists directory and delete the duplicates by hand.  If this did not solve your playlist duplication issue, go ahead and start a new thread in the forums.

I am TRYING to find an answer, and so far i'm not finding it or figuring out how to do this.

I have a Zune.  I synced it with a new computer.  All the content on the Zune is now on my computer EXCEPT for the playlists.

Do i HAVE to create a new playlist on my computer?  why can i not simply drag and drop the playlist from my device to the computer?  i can highlight, select, but when i drop it into the collection/computer icon, nothing happens.

You cannot reverse sync playlists from the zune to the PC.  That feature does not exist, unfortunately.

re: Mapped Network drive. So I have been getting dupplicate playlists and couldn't even find a *.zpl file on my system. Changed my library settings to compname as you recommended. When I remove the mapped version of the drive (y:), do I say to "remove the folder and its contents" OR "remove the folder and keep its contents?"

1) there should be a \playlists folder inside your monitored music folder.  The zpl files are there, or should be...  2) remove and keep contents!   (You are just changing how the monitored folder is labeled- from drive letter and folder name to \\computername\folder.)

my software has duped music files onto my device (not in a playlist)....the only solution was to format the device to remove it.

But you can add or open Zune playlist (.zpl) in Windows Media Player. Wink [;)]

Okay MR. MVP here is one for you. I have found a bug with the Auto Playlist feature on the software. For the last few months I had made a play list that would keep track of my #1 Favorite Song, and for months it displayed "Bleed It Out" by Linkin Park. Yesterday I happened to notice on the Song listing that Weird Al's "Whatever you like" had 9 more plays than "Bleed It Out" So I started to mess around with the Auto Play list and came to this conclusion. When the Rating and the Arrange Songs are set together then the playlist freezes up. So I want it to show only the Most Played songs with a heart and it will not do that. At the moment I can only have a ratting of ALL with MOST PLAYED, or LIKE with RANDOM, I want LIKE with MOST PLAYED. So can you fix this or forward this message to someone who can.

Unable to delete things from my collection...

BiologyMan 9/18/2009 12:00:42
I recently upgraded to the 4.0 software, but when I started it up it started adding many of my songs twice. I tried deleting them manually but I can hit delete or right click - delete as much as I want and nothing is happening. I even tried removing my music folder from the folders to look for music and removed all its files from the collection, I cut and pasted all the music to another folder, I uninstalled then reinstalled the software but I can't seem to get rid of these songs... I have 3000+ songs in my collection and none of them are actually able to play since they aren't there on my drive anymore... How do I get rid of these songs, start my collection from zero again and add then re-add my stuff again...

Thanks

4. EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE.  YOU'RE F-----D.

Why does an external hard drive munge the system. I have playlists spawning copies by the dozen and the first three options do not apply, unless it thinks that C:\ is a mapped drive. An external Hard drive, I do have though.

The problem only appeared after loading the Zune 4.0 Desktop client and the 3.2 (35) firmware.

i believe the issue revolves around the hid requirements and the windows os.  hid = hardware identification...each piece of hardware has a number assigned to it from windows (not an issue for mac or linux i understand).  portable devices will occasionally be re-assigned a new number; that makes all of the software references incorrect.

this is less of an issue for sync devices as it is for other types of software (ftp in particular) as the software is more accomodating.

you can prove this by installing windows to a hard drive, then transferring that installation to a different drive and using it to run the os....you will never get recognition of those types of devices and the only fix is to re-install windows to the drive.....lots of discussion on this issue being mapped drive and i can see why as the two are very similar.  this is why they tell you not to install your os on a portable drive.
