Zune Pad won't work... And neither will restart...

First of all, let me start off by saying I think that there would be many less problems with Zunes these days, if they wouldn't have used the touch pad idea. I'm not the only one of my friends that has a Zune with the touch pad, and is already starting to be unresponsive.

I've got a few problems with my zune, but some of them can't be fixed by myself alone, but I can survive with them.

As of today though, I have 2 new ones. First, my Zune pad totally decided to stop functioning. The back and play buttons still work just fine. I had my whole library on shuffle, so i can still play songs. However, i can't go to my music, or even move on the home screen.

And my newest problem consists of neither of the reset functions (back + up, back + down) working. In fact, all it does is do a quick little blink (hardly noticable, and you would miss it if you blinked).

My warranty isn't up yet though, so I may end up just sending it in to also get rid of all the other problems it has. Though it would be awesome if anybody knew a solution to this. :(

Does it work OK for a while after a reboot (what you called reset...) and then go bad?  Or is it bad all the time now?  If it's all the time, I'd try restoring the device firmware first, then I'd call support for a warranty repair/replacement if that didn't work.

It appears that I can't even do that, as the zune pad isn't responding whatsoever. And yes, it doesn't work at all even after the blink. I guess i'll have to take it up with Microsoft. :(

re: Zune Pad won't work... And neither will restart...
My 120gb Zune just developed the same problem with exactly the same symptoms.  I've only had it since last October!  How are we supposed to reset this thing if the touchpad doesn't work?

Has anyone else encountered this problem and resolved it?

FOLLOW UP:

Erasing my Zune appears to have fixed the problem.  I erased it by going to "Settings>Device>Erase all content" in the Zune software, and my touchpad started responding again.  For the sake of prudence, I completely wiped the Zune's system (following these instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927001/?sd=zune ) before I started restoring the content.  Restoring is going to take a while, but right now it looks like my Zune is back from the void.  I'm crossing my fingers that it won't happen again.

It may be one of two things...the process you used forces a reboot (fixes temp glitches) and reloading the firmware could have 'fixed' a file corruption issue in the zune firmware.  My bet is that it's the former (ther reboot) - but I don't know of any way to tell for sure.  But, good advice is to shut down fully (somewhat frequently) by holding back and down.  You will then get a reboot at the next start...

re: Zune Pad won't work... And neither will restart...

HELP!!!

My Zune is currently not working properly. Just recently, I plugged my zune in to my computer and let it charge (normally for 3 hrs)... but now  it stays frozen  in charging mode after I unplug it .

It will not restart ( tried the back button and the up  combination, as well as the back button  and down combination, in addition to just holding down the play button, after fully draining it and charging it again).

I even left it alone for a week and it still does not respond after charging it. It just  stays frozen in the charging mode and does not respond to the touchpad. And the device is not on lock so I ruled that out ... I don't know what else to do.

I really do not want to risk ruining my Zune by taking it apart and removing and then putting the hard drive and battery back in to the device.  My warranty has expired and it is quite expensive to have it repaired...Does anyone have any suggestions before I break the bank and have it sent in for repairs??

There's a good chance all you need is to reboot...you're just 'locked up.'  All you can do (short of sending it somewhere for repair) is let the battery die, then charge it.  It will boot up at that point....and you should immediately reboot it for good measure.  Good luck!

I have a 4 GB Zune with a non-responsive D-pad and I have tried the letting the battery die, Erasing everything and also doing an update. It won't let me do a full restore because the button will not work. Not still under warranty. If I can't fix it I will probably end up buying a new player for cheaper than fixing this one. I have liked the functions on the Zune but will switch if I can't get it to work.

there's one more thing you can try...  play around with reinstalling the games.  You uninstall them from the device, but reinstall them from the software...  you will probably only be able to do the second part (install.)  This will reinstall at least part of the firmware, so let's see if it helps?  Good luck!
