- QUICK FIX-(Sticky this is you must)
For those of you that have Windows Vista 32bit Edition and the new Zune.exe crashes on start every single time and uninstall/reinstall is not working for you, rightclick the icon/shortcut and run it in compatibility mode with Windows 2000. This fixes it for the most part! However, personally I still can not sync podcast subscriptions without it crashing, but at least I could sync and update my firmware!Microsoft:Here are the Event Viewer dumps that we are getting:Crash on start:The description for Event ID 1000 from source Application Error cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If someone else has this issue, please verify that this works for you, I would really like to know.

Hi,
We are currently investigating the original issue (BTW, thanks for the Event Viewer information). But, the subsequent issues you are seeing are all a consequence of running Zune in the Windows 2000 compatibility mode (which is not supported by Zune and causes the PlatformNotSupported exception to be thrown in different places).
Does reverting the compatibility mode causes the application to crash again on startup?
In any case, running with compatibility mode enabled is not a recommended solution...
Thanks,

We are still working on the determining the exact cause of the issue which is causing Zune to crash on startup. Meanwhile, I think I have a possible workaround for it, but please be sure to notice the caveat in the article regarding restoring your current protected content licenses.
Please let us know if that solves the problem.
Also, could you tell us if there was any recent hardware changes in this machine, such as BIOS upgrade or CPU change?
Oh wow,I turned off Compatibility Mode for Windows 2000 for Zune.exeRenamed the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRMbackupDownloaded the DRM security component update at http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=34506Relaunched the software and it's now completly functional, even podcasts. Thanks I owe you big time, I will pass this information out now.
Also, I did recently (about 2 weeks before the new software/firware update) switch my CPU/Motherboard without reinstalling Vista, and I was pretty much guessing that this is why it was happening, but didn't want to reinstall vista. I went from a P4 Prescott to the Q6600 Core2Quad, maybe it has something to do with going from a single thread/core to multiple thread/cores or maybe it only happens when running a 64bit processor on the 32bit OS, I'm not sure.
