I too am suffering through this outage. I encourage all owners or currently unusable devices to exercise patience and restraint with respect to this outage. I am confident that the Zune team is working on resolving this issue as quick as possible. I advise you to not try the battery reset fix that is circulating as this will void your warranty, if any, and will likely preclude you from particpating in any kind of other fix.
If the problem is software related I anticipate that there will be a fix today, be patient. If its hardware related then The Zune team (not MS corporate) should take steps to offer voucers for massively discounted upgrades.
Regardless, consider yourself lucky that the batteries don't explode. And if there is any good that has come out of this it that the size of the Zune community has been exposed. The Zune community can no longer be called small and insignificant by iCabal people as the sheer size of this outage and the coverage on tech blogs has been large.
Again, be patient, keep an eye on the forums and I will try to update this post as I get news.
I am mad as HECK, that this problem has happened for no other reason that I got my Zune when it first came out as a christmas gift from my wife (who by the way does not care about technology as much as I do). So this is a big deal to me. I brag to everyone with an ipod that I take my 30GB over any ipod shmipod. I am now going to be a laughing stock if they do not at least recall or fix the problem for free for loyal Microsoft software and hardware purchasers.

I don't know, but have to strongly believe this is a firmware glitch. Hardware doesn't fail across many many users all on the same day. Stay calm, and watch the support page for updates.

if and when they fix my 30gb zune I am selling it and getting an ipod. I haven't had the one I have now for a month (I had to argue with Microsoft to get mine replaced for free) and now this happened. Seriously, Microsoft can kiss my ass.

This is my fear too. It won't reset, it won't respond to being plugged in, USB doesn't recognize the device. I don't see an easy fix but then I don't work on the Zune team. *keeping my fingers crossed*
