Cannot Install Zune Driver

Aden Nak 11/15/2007 06:46:50
Just wondering if anyone has made any progress on the Zune driver issue. I'm running XP SP2, fully updated, with a fresh install of the new Zune software and a Zune 80GB. I've uninstalled and re-installed the software several times (by way of Microsoft's walkthrough for a full removal), tried every USB port on my computer, checked that all of my motherboard drivers are up to date, and manually tried to force-feed Windows the Zune.inf file that sits in the c:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers directory. No matter what I do, I get this crap mere seconds after Windows detects the Zune (which, might I add, it correctly identifies as a Zune in the Device Manager):

The cable and the hardware work because I installed them fine on my work computer - of course, that's not where any of my media is. So that doesn't help me, but I did so to test the Zune itself. Does anyone have any ideas? I've scoured this board, every other Zune board I could find, Microsoft's actual site. . . nothing. The machine in question is a very stable, reliable box, and I've never had a hardware problem with it ever before. Please help - my two hundred and fifty dollar paperweight is really getting tiresome!

Try rebooting the device by holding the back button and up button for several seconds.

Oh, I've tried rebooting the device, resetting the firmware (which needed me to come back into work this morning to get the hardware up and running again). . . I need to get back home so I can try rebooting into safe mode and checking to see if there's a bum copy of the device still lurking in my device list. The next step is re-installing Windows XP, and I really, really am not looking forward to that.

I'm getting the same exact error too, and like you I've loaded and unloaded the Zune software enough (and from enough different sources and in enough different versions) to be fairly sure that it's not the Zune software.  I've made sure my USB drivers are up to date, as well as everything else on my machine.  Also, my Zune charges on the USB cord, and plays just fine on it's own, so again, I'm fairly sure it's not the Zune.  (I would try it on my work machine, but alas, I'm still at Windows 2000 here. :)

The outside info I've seen about this (such as this link here) has suggested that the message is really reporting a conflict in USB drivers.  Specific examples I've seen mentioned are a PS3 driver and a CVS digital camera hack.   I found them through searching the phrase '"The system cannot find the file specified" zune'  At this point, though, I know I haven't used those drivers, and I can't figure out how to track down other possible drivers.

The problem is often the USB port and/or driver, and often the front ports are different than the rear ports, but it sounds like you may have eliminated that problem.

Look in the event viewer at the application and system logs to see if there are any warnings or errors at the time you connect the device.  Events from WPD would be particularly useful.

Yeah, I checked that:  No events at all when I've connected it.

If you look in device manager when the device is connected, does it show error 10 or another error?

What version of Windows are you using?  XP/Vista and version number?
